The Gregorian calendar was constructed to give a close approximation to the tropical year, which is the actual length of time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun. According to the Gregorian calendar, the calendar year begins on January 1 and ends on December 31. The Gregorian calendar today serves as an international standard for civil use.
The Gregorian calendar was used nearly in all countries of the Arab world. The month names of the Gregorian calendar were used as it is in Egypt, Iraq, Sudan and Yemen. In other Arabic countries some modification or actual changes in naming or pronouncing of months were observed. The names of the Gregorian calendar months in the different countries of the Arab world were as follows:
