An astronomical calendar is a calendar that is regulated by ongoing reference to certain astronomical observations rather than relying arithmetic rules.
Such calendars include the Chinese calendar and the Islamic calendar.
The advantage of such a calendar is that it can be perfectly accurate and this accuracy does not perish with time. The disadvantage is that one cannot predict with certainty when every date will occur.
